The Client

The client runs an evidence-based weight management mobile app service that helps people keep their body weights in check. The app helps monitor eating habits, activity goals, and other day-to-day lifestyle changes for self-management of body weight.

The Challenge

The Challenge

The client was operating on a legacy-old weight management app initially. But it needed critical optimizations. The solution had multiple issues and flaws.

For example, weight management charts didn't show up correctly. Workout videos buffered and froze most of the time. Sometimes, videos didn't play at all. Several junk characters persisted across APIs, which rendered data incorrectly. Several anomalies got sent to API endpoints, breaking the app structure. In addition, the lack of a modern interface and a cumbersome configuration led to severe issues and lower app adoption. Over time, these adverse effects multiplied, resulting in poor app performance

The client found it extremely difficult to garner audience attention with such massive flaws. On top of it, the client didn’t have the resources to tackle all these.

So, they turned to Capital Numbers to replace the legacy problems with a power-packed solution.

Our challenge was to replace all junk codes, adjust APIs, and eliminate all bugs without changing the app’s core features. That is, we had to do all the API adjustments and code refactoring without changing the crucial functionalities, such as:

  • A 12-Week Fitness Plan
  • Survey Questions
  • My Goals
  • My Calculators
  • My Diary
  • My Progress
  • My Locals
  • My Tips and Tools

We had to analyze the missing loops carefully and bring meaningful improvements while keeping the core features the same. Plus, we had to launch it in 60 days.

The Solution

The Solution

We began the work by examining the utterly distorted code. We then finalized the best ways to inject good code in place of them. Next, we went ahead creating a high-level application architecture.

At this stage, we used Figma because Figma is perfect for creating complex mobile UI architectures. Once we finalized the design, we began with the coding part.

We had the Laravel backend ready. So, we made the necessary API adjustments within this backend to render data correctly and close all the missing loops.

Next, we used React Native to code the frontend part. React Native libraries helped us fine-tune various sliders, icons, buttons, charts, graphs, checkboxes, lists, carousels, etc.

We wrote stable, good-quality code using TypeScript. We also saved development hours at this stage as TypeScript helped us write a single codebase for iOS and Android app versions.

We used Redux Toolkit to preserve and hold the state controls of this app and stored all datasets using MySQL.

We next used Firebase to ‘push’ notifications on users’ devices and remind them about their fitness goals and meal times. Additionally, we used Google Places to show users the nearest gym centers, yoga schools, and pharma shops.

As for the paid subscriptions, we used in-app purchases and checked both apps end-to-end to see if all the features were well-optimized. Once we found no issues, we made the iOS and Android apps live on Apple App Store and Play Store, hosting the backend on Amazon S3.
