Insightful Crop Metrics Solution Empowering Nut Growers

For nut growers, knowing, at a glance, which fields are set for profitable harvests and which need immediate attention becomes a compass, guiding decisions that can mean the difference between a bumper crop and a missed opportunity. With intelligent metrics at their fingertips, nut growers can steer each acre toward peak performance, ensuring every harvest reaches its full potential. Recognizing this, the client considered developing an app displaying key metrics on nuts like almonds and walnuts.

An app showing the complete picture of nut quality and readiness could help growers decide on harvest timing and handling. Such an app would be like having a pulse on the orchard’s health. To this end, the client approached Capital Numbers as their technology partner in developing such an app.

However, the path to creating this app dashboard held a unique challenge for Capital Numbers: We needed to design a secure, dedicated folder on our server - a digital vault - where the client could safely upload raw information on walnuts and almonds. The client wanted this setup because they wanted to retain complete control over data upload while protecting the confidentiality of their ERP system.

This specialized setup had to serve as an automated bridge, allowing raw data to flow effortlessly from upload to actionable insight. Crafting this solution required precision engineering skills, such as advanced data processing and secure FTP configuration, to ensure that every metric on walnuts and almonds - from moisture levels to yield percentages - arrives on the app dashboard on time.

Additionally, we had to configure the FTP data feed logic with a smart three-day data window, allowing a one-day overlap to ensure no data slips through the cracks. By overlapping one-day data flow, we had to cover every potential gap, guaranteeing a continuous data stream without any misses.

We started the work by building a rich dashboard that could display detailed insights on almond and walnut quality. Using WordPress, MySQL, JavaScript, jQuery, HTML, and CSS, we built the dashboard to show crop metrics like nut weight, inedible pound, loose kernels, crack-out rate, foreign material levels, moisture content, and scratch percentage in a tabular format.

Then came the primary backbone: establishing a secure digital vault on our server, a dedicated space where the client could regularly upload raw data on walnuts and almonds. Developing this backbone was no mean feat; it demanded precise FTP data feed logic to pull raw data from the vault and present it on the dashboard as structured reports while calculating totals, averages, and cumulative insights. This process was intricate as every update had to be an ongoing narrative, providing growers with layered insights into their crop health. Moreover, we implemented cron jobs to automate raw data processing, keeping data flow consistent on the dashboard without manual efforts.

Capital Numbers also took it further by developing a unique 3-day window logic for data inspection verification. This layer, featuring a one-day overlap, ensured that no data point on any given day went unchecked before appearing on the dashboard. By overlapping data from the previous day with the current day's data, we ensured any gap was automatically filled, guaranteeing an uninterrupted stream of accurate information.

Our next priority was making it easy for growers to access the dashboard data in downloadable PDF reports. So, we developed automated PDF generation to deliver neatly organized data summaries to growers’ fingertips.

For communication, we integrated Twilio to give growers control over how they receive updates. We ensured that growers could personalize notifications through SMS, WhatsApp, or email and stay connected to their crop updates.

Finally, we tested every inch of the system to leave no room for error. We validated each data mapping layer and fortified it with smart fallback mechanisms that spring into action to catch and correct system issues. Before hosting the app on AWS, we armed the system with red alerts that flag even the tiniest hiccups, guaranteeing a smooth, reliable data flow.

Capital Numbers' precision-driven approach resulted in a powerhouse application that puts every critical nut metric at growers’ fingertips while shielding the client’s ERP system. From nut weight and inedible pounds to loose kernels, chip percentage, crack-out rate, foreign material percentage, and moisture levels, it’s all in one interface, helping growers better understand their harvest quality.
